Monitoring in the context of ecosystem restoration

Internationale Zusammenarbeit
Hintergrundpapier
Monitoring is key in the context of ecosystem restoration. Both on the EU level and the national level, existing or newly established monitoring schemes should inform the prioritisation of restoration actions. Both the progress of restoration measures and the subsequent improvement of ecosystem condition needs to be monitored, to allow for adaptive actions and to verify success.

Beschreibung

In 2021, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment, organised a two-part technical expert workshop on monitoring in the context of ecosystem restoration.

The aim of the workshop was to share and examine prior experiences on restoration monitoring and to identify potential knowledge gaps within the context of legally binding EU nature restoration targets. To this end, several national examples were presented and a range of specific restoration cases and approaches were discussed with technical experts from 13 EU member states.
