The aim of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and experiences between representatives from governmental and scientific institutions as well as intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations involved in capacity-building activities with regard to biodiversity issues in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

The international workshop „Capacity-Building for Biodiversity in Central and Eastern Europe“ brought together 27 experts from 12 European countries from December 03-06, 2003. It was organized by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation at its conference centre, the “International Academy for Nature Conservation” on the Isle of Vilm.
Among the main topics for discussion were the possible tasks and functioning of a regional centre or network for capacity-building to promote the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the capacity needs of countries in the region.
