Intact peatlands are highly specialised ecosystems that perform a wide range of important functions. Despite this fact, vast areas of peatland in Europe are being drained and cultivated. This results in the loss of many functions and to significant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions. To protect peatlands and peat soils, a number of countries have recently developed peatland strategies and others are currently in the process of developing theirs. Germany’s National Peatland Protection Strategy was adopted by the Federal Cabinet on 9 November 2022. An English-language policy brief on Peatland Strategies in Europe outlines experience with and lists recommendations for peatland strategies in Europe (as of 2019).

As part of the BMUV Advisory Assistance Programme, and also under other BMUV funding programmes, BfN oversees nature conservation projects in Eastern European countries, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Selected projects are described below. The International Nature Conservation Academy supports nature conservation specialists and nature conservation institutions in from these focus regions with further training, expert workshops, studies and projects.
