Ilse of Vilm (Rügen)

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) has a site on the Isle of Vilm (Insel Vilm), south of the Island of Rügen in northeastern Germany. The Vilm site houses two BfN divisions: the International Nature Conservation Academy and Marine Nature Conservation. The island of Vilm is in the core zone of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and can only be reached by passenger ferry.

Getting there

By public transport

  • Important: When travelling by rail, select “Lauterbach Mole” as your destination.
  • Lauterbach Mole station is a 10-minute walk from the ferry landing stage.

By car

  • We do not recommend travelling by car, especially during the peak summer travel season.
  • BfN has a car park (free of charge) which is a 10-minute walk from the ferry landing stage.
  • We accept no liability for parked vehicles.

Crossing to the Isle of Vilm

  • The only way to cross from Lauterbach to the Isle of Vilm is on the BfN passenger ferry.
  • The crossing takes 10 minutes.
