The Protected Landscapes Specialist Group, a global working group of IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas, promotes the protected landscape approach by documenting
and presenting experience worldwide, mobilizing global expertise,
and developing guidance on protected landscapes. Protected Landscapes are protected areas based on the interactions of people
and nature over time in which safeguarding the integrity of this traditional interaction is vital to the protection, maintenance
and evolution of such an area” (
IUCN 2008). The mission of the Specialist Group is to promote
and demonstrate the value of Category V Protected Landscapes as a functional
and practical mechanism for the protection of biodiversity, cultural diversity
and the sustainable use of resources. The workshop will build on the recent work of the Specialist Group to explore the role of Category V protected areas in the larger landscape
and seascape with particular focus on three key areas: contributing to connectivity conservation, multi-stakeholder governance of protected areas,
and enhancing resilience.
