Creating a network of roost sites for bat species inhabiting human settlements
Support priority:
Sustaining species diversity: Reintroducing and protecting highly endangered plants and animals
Location:
Kreis (district) of Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hesse
Period:
11/1996 - 08/2001 (Main project)
11/1996 - 04/2002 (In-process scientific studies)
Short description:
In the main project, new bat roost sites were developed and constructed in buildings, accompanied by intensive public relations work. Publications produced took the form of a teacher's pack containing instructions for learning activities with young people, and an architect's pack containing instructions for building bat roosts (also available on CD-ROM).
Parallel scientific research investigated the occurrence of bats in villages and towns in the project area. It was part of the project`s target to analyze the distribution and density of selected species to find out the flight routes and activity patterns of bats in the landscape. The intensive mapping programme has resulted in the discovery of far more bat colonies in the project area than in the rest of the entire regional state of Hesse.
